Reviews of the island of sea women5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() Like many of the Chinese American author’s earlier books, it is set in Asia with ties to the United States, although the location this time is Korea, not China.Īnd like See’s “Shanghai Girls” and “Dreams of Joy,” the story takes readers on a journey spanning generations - in this case 1938 to 2008 - as moments of cherished friendship, unspeakable tragedy and, in the end, a plot twist worthy of Raymond Chandler unfold.Įarly on, readers are introduced to Mi-ja and Young-sook, precocious, 7-year-old best friends despite island elders’ misgivings that Mi-ja’s father was a collaborator with the hated Japanese, who controlled the island from 1910 until the end of World War II. ![]() The rings of power tolkien5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The first prose work Tolkien ever wrote about Middle-earth was the story “Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin” in The Book of Lost Tales, and it is there that the orcs first make their appearance in Tolkien’s world, as creatures made by “Melko” (later Morgoth) out of mud and slime, with hearts of granite. But in all that span, one of the most difficult and persistent problems that continually disturbed his created world was the problem of the origin of the orcs, and it is reflected in the history of his writings all the way from his very earliest works until his death. This collection of mythic and legendary material that would later be compiled and assembled into The Silmarillion (and the later 12-volume History of Middle-earth collection) was revised, edited, and sometimes entirely rewritten by Tolkien multiple times over the years, and was left ultimately unfinished upon his death. ![]() And launching his bark like a silver sparkĭown the sunlit breath of Day’s fiery Death ![]() The milagro beanfield war novel5/12/2023 ![]() I am all for progress and innovation, but it would be nice to have that without losing so much of our cultural heritage that is found increasingly in the small towns of the state. ![]() New Mexico seems to fighting a battle of two clashing cultures – the culture of the heritage and history of the original families who settled here over 400 years ago, and the ongoing culture of the rest of America that continues to come here and make small but significant changes to a way of life that has been consistent for hundreds of years. I loved the story of one man against the system – the whole David and Goliath theme – and could certainly relate it to much of what has gone on here in my state. ![]() ![]() Set in the mythical village of Milagro (there is actually a Milagro, NM, but the real town is nothing like the book’s version), it’s the story of Joe Mondragón and his fight for water rights, against big business, and in essence, it’s the story of the little guy fighting the system and – for once – winning. At last, we are in New Mexico! My home state is written about beautifully in this classic, The Milagro Beanfield War. ![]() Drive your plough5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “It could almost be an inventory of the ways narrative can serve a writer short of, and beyond, telling a story,” he said. I meet Tokarczuk before an interview at the British Library by the critic Adam Mars-Jones, who wrote a highly complimentary review of Flights in the London Review of Books. Brinkley records these milestones of the modern environmental movement through the first Earth Day in 1970, after which every American life would forever be touched by the environmental movement of the Long Sixties (1960–1973). Depicting the deathblow that could be dealt by artificial chemicals, specifically DDT, the book launched an eco-revolution among the American people, which went on to inspire landmark legislation during Lyndon Johnson’s and Richard Nixon’s presidencies. Carriger, the novel is a bit of a departure from the Victorian steampunk world of Carriger’s adult Parasol Protectorate and YA Finishing School series. Review: Gail Carriger is a must-read author for me, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read The Sumage Solution. Max and Biff form an instant connection, but the past that Max tries so hard to bury beneath copious amounts of sarcasm may stand between them. Biff is the Beta werewolf to his younger brother Alec’s Alpha, and he’s been tasked with getting the newly relocated pack officially registered. He’s also stuck in a bureaucratic job that’s going nowhere until Bryan “Biff” Frederiksen arrives at the DURPS office. To Sum It Up: Max Barker is a sumage, only able to absorb then redirect the quintessence that other mages use to cast spells. The Sumage Solution (San Andreas Shifters #1) ![]() |
